Tempeh is another common meat substitute used by vegetarians. It originated from Indonesia, but is widely used as a source of protein around the world. Like tofu, it is made of fermented bean curd, but because the fermentation process is different, it has a higher content of protein, dietary fiber and vitamins. It is also more firm and has a more powerful flavor.
