Free-range farm animals (cows, pigs, chickens, etc.) are ones that are allowed to graze outside, eat grass, etc. Although their situation is better than that of livestock who have to endure an awful existence indoors, they are subject to the same pain and suffering (and inhumane treatment) once they hit the slaughterhouses. Make no mistake about it - "free-range" is better, but it doesn't mean that the animal doesn't suffer.
