If a dairy cow gives birth to a male calf, this calf is almost immediately taken from her and sold to veal producers. Keep in mind that calves normally have a very strong bond with their mothers and suckle from them for nearly a year. These calves, however, are kept in a different location, are allotted enough space to stand but not to move, and are only given iron-deficient food to keep their muscles tender and soft, before they are killed and sold as "veal".
