Pigs, like most animals raised to be slaughtered, are confined in very tight quarters. Because of this, they become restless and start to chew on the bars of their cages and bite other pigs' tails. Instead of improving conditions, many slaughterhouses simply cut off their tails and break-off their sharp teeth to "prevent them from injuring themselves" when this happens.
