Chickens being raised for food (as well as the ones kept for eggs) often live in horrible conditions. Each egg-laying hen is given a space as big as a piece of paper. Their beaks are burned of with a hot blade in order to prevent boredom-induced pecking. Chickens raised for food (broilers) are often plumped up unnaturally so as to increase their body weight for consumption. It is not uncommon on a chicken farm to see chickens that have been fed so much they can't even walk.
